Nokia N900 software update release 1.2

By Rhiain on 25 May 2010

Nokia N900ESPOO, Finland – Attention Nokia N900owners: there’s a new software update coming your way this week (UK release today, and global release tomorrow Wednesday, May 26). Version 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) comes offering a range of enhancements to the already bursting Maemo5 mobile computer. Join us after the jump to find out what’s in store.

First up – new games join the veritable arcade already on offer in Ovi Store. Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget are all available to keep you entertained. Important to note though that Ovi Store will do a full switchover this week Thursday, May 27, so these games and other for-purchase apps will show up then.

Next are the improvements to communication. Email has been improved with the ability to accept or decline an event invitation right there in your inbox, and Facebook IM chat has also been bundled in. The release also brings with it video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.

An additional update you will be pleased to hear about is portrait browsing on the internet is a-go on the N900. Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment with changes to the UI, improving the experience of finding your way around. And finally, there’s also a change to the menu system UI with the first level now customisable.

Moving away from the update and to look at MeeGo and the Nokia N900. Many of you have been asking whether the new MeeGo platform will be supported on the N900 once it’s device-ready. Although Nokia N900 devices are being used for platform development and testing purposes by those involved in the MeeGo project, Nokia doesn’t have plans for a full scale commercial MeeGo upgrade on the Nokia N900. The reason? It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device. Nokia realises this news may be a disappointment for some, rest assured that Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo software on your Nokia N900, as evidenced by the PR 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) update available today.

Nokia E72

Created on 23 November 2009

The compact Nokia E71 earned kudos as one of the best business workhorses to emerge from the Eseries stable. But there’s no hostile makeover here with its successor edging into the frame – the new E72 is a smart-suited follow-up with credentials that build on the solid E71 blueprint, enhancing the overall experience. Out go the 3.2-megapixel optics in favour of a full 5-megapixel camera, an optical navigation key makes flicking through menus even easier when on the move, and its high-speed data talents can now handle blistering 10Mbps connections. The E72 still comes in a blazer-friendly 10mm slim shell and keeps its one-touch access to calendar, contacts, and (push) email. Instant messaging options include Ovi (naturally), Google Talk and Yahoo! Messager. Juggling multiple inboxes is made simple via Nokia Messaging, Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveller. The E72 comes stuffed with applications for reading PDFs and Office documents, travel and presentation tasks, and adding new software is as easy as clicking through to the ovi stor
